Transmission Methods

This page requires you to complete information about the file transmission methods you will use for each Section 111 file type. Choose your transmission carefully as this information cannot be changed online after you complete this Account Setup step. If you need to make a change later, you will have to contact your EDI Representative.

There are three separate methods of data transmission that Section 111 responsible reporting entities and their agents may utilize. See the Section 111 User Guides for more information:

  1. The CMS Electronic File Transfer (EFT) method involves transferring files using a secure network. Contact your EDI Representative for more information on setting up this option.
  2. The SFTP or Secure File Transfer Protocol method involves transmitting files via SFTP over the Internet to specified RRE ID directories on the Section 111 COBSW server. These directories are automatically set up for the RRE ID when this method is selected. A Section 111 COBSW login ID and password of an individual user (Account Manager [AM] or Account Designee [AD]) associated with the RRE ID must be used as credentials for SFTP. Any user's login ID associated with the RRE ID can be used for SFTP credentials.
  3. The HTTPS method is a simple file upload and download performed by a user (AM or AD) who is logged on to the Section 111 COBSW application. The user interface guides the user through a series of pages to perform the upload of input files and download of response files. The user must remain logged on to the COBSW until the upload/download finishes. Because of this, it is only recommended for relatively small files (fewer than 24,000 records).

Each file type can be set up with the same file transmission method or you may select a different file transmission method for each. However, whatever method is selected for the file type will be used to transmit the corresponding response file back by the BCRC. For example, if you select the CMS EFT method for a particular file type, then the BCRC will return your response file for that file type via CMS EFT.

If you expect to be transmitting files with more than 24,000 records on a regular basis, it is suggested that you use either CMS EFT or SFTP methods. HTTPS is more suitable for use with smaller files due to the time it may take to upload and download files during an active user session on the Section 111 COBSW using that method.

On this page, you will be presented with the file types depending on the information you provided in the New Registration step and earlier in this Account Setup.

GHP Basic Reporting Option Files: MSP Input, Query Only

GHP Expanded Reporting Option Files: MSP Input, Query Only, Non-MSP

NGHP (Liability/No-Fault/Workers’ Compensation) Files: Claim Input, Query

Next to each file type presented, click on the down arrow and select a method from the drop-down list that displays:

  • CMS Electronic File Transfer (EFT)
  • Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer (HTTPS)

If you plan on using the HIPAA Eligibility Wrapper (HEW) Software supplied by the BCRC, please select the version:

Click on the down arrow and select the version that you plan to use from the drop-down list. Select either Mainframe or PC/Server depending on where you will run the HEW software. Leave None selected if you will not be using the HEW software.

The Query Files must be transmitted in the HIPAA-compliant ANSI X12 270/271 transaction set. You may use your own translator software, or the HEW software (provided by the BCRC). If you choose to use the HEW software, please contact your assigned EDI Representative to provide you with a copy of the software. If you choose to use your own ANSI X12 translator, leave None selected and contact your EDI Representative for the necessary X12 mapping documents.
